I discovered Dame Bougie, aka Sylvie, through my work! Her workshop is located in Altkirch and it is there that she makes beautiful candles…but also fondants, hearts, kougelhopfs to melt, of all colors and almost all scents: fruits, flowers, sweets, drinks, etc. The opportunity to do some shopping and to discover how to make a candle!
First step: the wax! Sylvie uses different types of soy wax to make her candles and to obtain the most suitable texture according to the product. She also has the particularity of making the wicks of her candles herself, and it is quite a process. To make it simple, we use cotton coils, which we cut and which we “prime”: that is to say that we coat them with wax so that the cotton ignites correctly and durably. Then comes the coloring of the candles, with liquid dye or pigments.
As for the perfumes, they come from Grasse and are specially designed for candles, mixed in an oily solution. And you can feel it! The smells are a real delight.
All the cooking is done in a water bath, and it’s all a question of temperature and dosage. The dye is put on by the drop, and a mistake in heating can alter the candle. Sylvie did a lot of tests and research before getting to this point, but it’s a real passion!
Would you like to know more? Visit the backstage upon request: you will discover Sylvie’s workshop, her creations, and as a bonus, the multiple tools she and her family thought of to make her candles…personally, I was amazed!
My favorite product: the little wax kugelhopf, which I have already offered to many friends! I think it’s great, and it’s 100% artisanal 🙂 as for the flavors, I love the Malgache (spicy vanilla) in winter and Lemonade in summer.
I liked
- The different candles, especially the kougelhopfs to melt
- Discover the candle making process
I liked a little less
