The Villa de la Ganzau is a small jewel nestled in the heart of a nature reserve south of Strasbourg. I didn’t know this area at all before I went and was amazed. We are still in Strasbourg but we have the impression to be in full campaign. The Villa de la Ganzau is a particularly magical Alsatian gite: imagine a large building dating from 1950, a hunting lodge and a dovecote nestled in the heart of a hectare of forest… The perfect place to get away from it all and spend a romantic weekend!

The owners, Catherine and Bernard, are adorable and welcoming. Take the time to talk with them, you will be amazed by the work they do: they renovate the Villa entirely by themselves while having two full time jobs on the side. After the hunting lodge and the pigeon house, they are now tackling the villa, where they live and will eventually open guest rooms. I love talking to people like that, who are full of ideas and projects and who put them into action: it’s thanks to people like that that old buildings are restored to their former glory!

Two gîtes are available: one in the hunting lodge and the other in the pigeon house, both of which can accommodate two people. I didn’t get to visit the pigeon house, which was busy, but I can already tell you that it is beautiful from the outside! I personally slept in the hunting lodge, which I loved. It’s a real little cocoon, with a harmonious mix of ancient and modern decoration, with little nods to the theme of hunting. The gite is very comfortable and perfectly equipped: very good bed, bathroom with shower, kitchenette, TV, speaker, dining table, fireplace… I loved the evening I spent there, having a romantic dinner while sipping a glass of crémant (a bottle is offered by Catherine and Bernard) and admiring the fire from the comfortable club chairs. A real good time!

Breakfast at the Villa de la Ganzau

You may think that there is no breakfast because it is a guesthouse… Well, yes! Catherine does not offer breakfast every day because she works during the week, but will gladly do so on weekends if you ask. I enjoyed the homemade breakfast with our lovely hosts, as it was the perfect opportunity to chat with them and learn more about their (rather crazy!) project at Villa de la Ganzau.

On the breakfast menu: hot drinks, freshly squeezed orange juice, homemade kouglof, homemade cake (a delicious spiced cake that day), homemade yogurt and jams… Delicious! If you prefer a savory breakfast, just tell Catherine and she will adapt. Really nice!
