The guest house La Vallée is located in Kuttolsheim, in the Kochersberg in Alsace. We are about 20km west of Strasbourg, which makes it a pleasant place to enjoy the traditional setting of an Alsatian village while having easy access to Strasbourg.
The guest rooms La Vallée are charming guest rooms held by Caroline and Patrick. Caroline, British and having lived in many different countries, has always had in mind to open one day her guest house and to welcome people from all over the world. One day she was browsing the real estate ads in Alsace, Patrick’s home region, when she fell in love with the house in Kuttolsheim. This old Alsatian farmhouse, tastefully renovated, was already home to a guest house, so Caroline jumped at the chance. The love affair was confirmed after the visit of the house, and a few months later the couple settled there…
I can easily understand why they fell in love with this place: it is a traditional Alsatian farm, with its large courtyard, its half-timberings and its outbuildings. The kind of place I love!
My room at La Vallée
The rooms of the Valley are in fact three small independent houses: we are a little between the room of hosts and the lodging. There is no kitchen, so it’s not a gite, but it’s bigger than a simple bed and breakfast since you have a small living room in each room, as well as a table on the terrace outside. There are three different rooms, some for two people and others for three or four people.
These little houses are all tastefully decorated, in a rather clean style but full of nice little touches. They are small cocoons where it is good to curl up with a book, while drinking a tea and tasting one of the small cookies placed at the disposal by Caroline in large glass jars… Please note that the houses are on two floors with a steep staircase: it is not ideal for people who have difficulties to move.
The bedding is very comfortable and we are in the quiet: we sleep very well. The bathrooms are not huge but reasonably sized and good cosmetics are offered. Bathrobes are provided in addition to towels.
The table d’hôtes is not proposed all the time, it depends on the availability of Caroline and Patrick. I had the chance to test it and I enjoyed it. The menu changes of course depending on the seasons and the inspiration of the cook and the chef (the hosts!), but I was able to try a salmon tartar with apples, a beef stroganoff and an apple strudel. Everything was excellent and served with good wine.
Breakfast at La Vallée
The prepared breakfast is delicious. Caroline and Patrick favour local products, so you will have, for example, charcuterie and cheese from the neighbouring farm. We have some great farms in the area, take advantage of them! You will also have a delicious granola, homemade cakes, good bread, homemade jams, squeezed orange juice… A real king’s breakfast!
I live close by, so I might as well tell you that I find the location very good! 😛 Joking aside, the Kochersberg is a pleasant place to stay because you will be immersed in traditional Alsatian villages with little tourism while being close to the main sites: Strasbourg is 20 minutes away by car, the beginning of the Wine Route is 10 minutes away, Colmar is 1 hour away… This allows you to do a lot of things during your stay! The house is located at the end of the village, just at the entrance of the forest: it can also be nice to go for a walk and enjoy the nature.
- Beautiful building
- Spacious and comfortable rooms
- Warm welcome
- Excellent table d’hôtes and breakfast featuring local products
I liked less
- Steep stairs in the rooms: not suitable for everyone!
