Taking a boat trip in Strasbourg is an alternative and original way to discover the city. Did you know that the city of Strasbourg has a big island (Grande Île), listed as a World UNESCO heritage site and home to the historical city centre? Surrounded by the Ill (affluent of the Rhine) and with its many canals, Strasbourg is well-suited to be discovered by boat. What could be better than admiring the capital of Alsace from another perspective, to understand the significance of water in the city and to enjoy the sweet life on a boat?
Visiting Strasbourg by boat
Sitting on a large riverboat, you will travel slowly through the rivers of the city, all the while enjoying the landscape. This boat ride in Strasbourg and the different thematic tours offered by “Batorama Strasbourg” introduces you to the city in a unique way.
Architectural styles come one after another: from half-timbered houses of La Petite France to the modern European institutions and the German Imperial District, Strasbourg is very pleasant to observe from a boat. The ride will give you a global vision of the city and will allow you to understand quickly how it’s organised and its different districts, witnesses of its past and present history. The audio guide supplied will also provide you with interesting explanations about the history of the city, all the while being fun for young and old alike.
Yes, a boat tour with Batorama Strasbourg is something very touristy to do, but it’s also very nice and an excellent way to spend some time, to relax and to dive into the atmosphere of Strasbourg, following the current and the rhythm of the Ill lapping. I recommend it to all my friends coming for a visit (and I’ve also done it several times, discovering new things every time!). Fair winds, dear sailors! ;-)
- Seeing the city from the river: it’s a brand new angle!
- Observing the different architectural styles of Strasbourg
- The possibility to choose a covered or unconvered boat
- Pass Alsace partner
I liked a little less
- Don’t forget to buy your ticket ahead of time, as it does get crowded!

Prices and opening times
Only one company offers city boat tours: Batorama. Times depend on the month of the year. You will find here the times for boat tours in Strasbourg.
Tickets can be directly bought at the pier (place du Rohan), but there are often crowds at peak times and boats end up being full. To avoid crowds, it’s possible to book your Batorama tickets in advance. Click here to buy your ticket online.
A Batorama ride can be included in your Pass Alsace (you’ll have to add an extra of 5€ to your pass).
I did the tour “Strasbourg, over 20 centuries of history”, which lasts 1h10. This is the most common tour. The audio guide (available in French, English, German and Italian) is included in the ticket price.
Boats depart from Place de Rohan (right in the city center, on the îlot central of Strasbourg). Stop Langstross Grand’Rue (tram A and D) / Broglie (tram B, C and F) / Corbeau (bus 10).
