It’s quite hard to choose among all these Christmas markets in December in Alsace. Highly recommended by many of my friends, I decided to visit that of our Vauban town… Neuf-Brisach Christmas Market! The town of Neuf Brisach, entirely built in 1697, hosts an exceptional (only on weekends) and unique Christmas Market: it’s on the theme of a village from 1700 ! This extraordinary Christmas Market is literally divided in two parts: one traditional Christmas Market side and another side, entirely dedicated to this historical period… so, are you ready to jump back to 300 years ago?
The village from 1700
Discover life at the end of the 17th century by wandering in this market quite unlike any other… ground covered with straw, smells of wood fire and of wild board on a spit… a guaranteed change of scenery! On this side of the market, there is (almost) nothing for sale, but a lot to learn. From one shack to the next (built as this historical time), you’ll discover ancestral trades, forgotten know-hows and crafts such as the knife-grinder (for knives and scissors), the basket maker (and their beautiful baskets), the upholsterer (refurbishing chairs and armchairs). You’ll be able to admire, amongst others, a blacksmith, a clogmaker, an embroiderer, a weaver, a carpenter, a clockmaker… at work… and everyone is wearing period attire!
You can also see the pressing of apples for making mulled apple juice (highly recommended), smell the scent (and why not taste) bredeles baked in front of you by the chef of the Bredla Hus or even see how difficult it was to build (and dig) wooden pipelines at the time… There are countless demonstrations done by passionate people who want to share their knowledge! Stroll from one discovery to the next in this unique atmosphere… and why not let yourself be tempted by a sandwich of wild boar on the spit?
Traditional Christmas Market
A few steps away, travel through time to go to the traditional Christmas Market. Located right in front of the prettily illuminated town hall (with a childcare centre – 3€ one hour), more traditional, this market still has a lot of charm. You’ll find arts and crafts of good quality; mostly decorations. It’s perfect to finalise (or start…) your Christmas shopping.
So if you are in the neighborhood and if you are looking for a unique and rewarding Christmas Market, don’t hesitate to organize (only during weekends) your visit to Neuf-Brisach !
- countless and fascinating demonstrations
- the attention and care to the decoration of the village from 1700
- the town illuminations around the market
- the childcare centre at the town hall (3€ an hour)
I liked a little less
- difficult parking with many spaces for buses only.
