The refuge du Lac Noir belongs to the Association des Amis de la Nature du Val d’Orbey. It is located 200 meters from the Lac Noir, in the village of Orbey, in the Alsatian part of the Vosges. It is the ideal starting point (or arrival point) for hiking lovers! There is a lot of possible walks around the area, with the numerous marked walks of the Club Vosgien.
The refuge is located in a beautiful building and has 50 spots. The rooms are of variable sizes (from 2 to 6 bed) and some of them are bunk beds. The confort is quite basic, as it generally is in a refuge, but it still remains alright and everything is very clean. Bathrooms are small considering the size of the refuge, but the showers are good and with hot water!
There are also some common rooms at the refuge du Lac Noir: two big dining rooms (that can host 50 people) and a huge equipped kitchen. It’s very practical! The dining room was very noisy when I went, but some soundproofing works are planned.
The refuge is taken care of by various relaying members of the association. You will always find someone to guide you, to give you some information and also to serve your drinks if needed.
Please note that it is also possible to privatize the refuge!
- Practical and pleasant location
- Well-equipped refuge
- Not expensive at all
I liked a little less
- Noisy dining room but works are being done

You will find here the detailed prices (about 13€ per night for an adult not subscribed to the association) and the contact of the person in charge of bookings. Privatizing the refuge cost about 630€ for a non-member of the association.
You will find here all the information about the opening dates of the refuge du Lac Noir.
You’ll have to go to Lac Noir (in the municipality of Orbey). When arriving, face the lake and take the road climbing up to the left (there are signs). The refuge is located on the right, after about 200 meters. Le Lac noir is located:
- 32 km from Colmar (about 45 minutes drive)
- 75 km from Mulhouse (about 1h10 drive)
- 100 km from Strasbourg (about 1h30 drive)
In winter, you’ll have to park at Lac Noir and then walk (about 200 meters). In summer, it is possible to park in front of the refuge.
By public transport
It is not possible :-(
If you don’t plan to cook, there is a restaurant in Lac Noir, l’Auberge du Lac Noir. I haven’t tried it. Don’t forget to check the opening dates and times, as is not open all year long.
