There is a reason why Alsace is famous for its Christmas markets. During the holiday season, the whole region plays along and uses its imagination to best decorate houses and towns. It’s a real moment of joy in contrast with the sadness of winter!

So then, what are the most beautiful Christmas markets in Alsace? Which one should you visit?

To help you in your (difficult) choice, here is the list of a few that I consider as the most beautiful Christmas markets in Alsace. They are the ones that I visited and particularly enjoyed. For each of them, I have noted their own little specificities. If you decide to visit these Christmas markets with children, here is another article with our selection of family Christmas markets in Alsace.

If you are also tempted by going to Switzerland, don’t forget Basel Christmas market, located just over the border, which is really worth a visit!

My advice: visit Christmas markets at the end of the afternoon, when the sun sets. It’s the time when the atmosphere is the loveliest! Have a glass of mulled wine, taste some local specialties and let the magic of Christmas in Alsace take you!

And if you are looking for a place to stay in Alsace at this time, you can have a look at my section Accommodation or you could come and stay at my place ! :-)

Colmar Christmas Market

coeurs-marche-noel-colmar

I think Colmar Christmas market is my favorite Christmas market in Alsace. The town and the canals are lovely all year long, but Christmas decorations give it an additional charm...

I liked

  • The decorations in the town centre are marvelous: not one building can escape it!
  • It's a big Christmas market (in fact, there are several of them scattered around town) and you can wander there for a long while.
  • There are cute little things you can bring back for your own Christmas decorations!

I liked a little less

  • There are a lot of people: it's the price of fame!

I liked

  • The village in itself is already marvelous. It shines even more with Christmas decorations!
  • Christmas atmosphere throughout the village with beautiful decorated facades. The atmosphere isn't only in a couple of chalets!

I liked a little les

Strasbourg Christmas Market

quais-noel-strasbourg

Strasbourg Christmas market(also called Christkindelsmärik) is one of the biggest and oldest Christmas markets in Europe. It was founded in the 16th century! Actually, there are several Christmas markets scattered all over the historical city centre. A few years ago, I was writing that I was disappointed by this market, which had become too mass-produced, but I can recommend it once again: it got its soul back! Overall, chalets now offers mainly quality products with ample space given for local and artisanal products. Phew! :)

Besides, the city is extremely well-decorated and it is very pleasant to walk around to admire the incredible decorations of the facades and the illuminations. Strasbourg is also magnificent at Christmas, and it amazes me every year!

Click here to read my short guide about Strasbourg Christmas Market , where you can find all the good adresses! ;-) And if you would like to discover an alternative Christmas market very popular with locals, you can check out the Marché OFF de Strasbourg, a social and community Christmas market.

I liked

  • The atmosphere of the town, dressed up with Christmas decorations. Magical!
  • The size of the market: you can easily find something to do for a whole day.

I liked a little less

  • The crowd on weekends. You can hardly put one foot in front of the other (but if you come during the week, it's completely different!)

Mulhouse Christmas Market

marche-noel-alsace-mulhouse

Not the most famous, but still full of charm, Mulhouse Christmas Market is worth a stop!

I liked

  • Less touristy than other more well-known markets: there is less people and it's very pleasant!
  • There is a lot of Alsace textile on the market, with for example a different special Christmas fabric every year decorating the whole market and that you can purchase.
  • Illuminations on Réunion square are stunning!

I liked a little less

  • Mulhouse has a lot less charm than other towns and villages like Colmar or Kaysersberg.

Ribeauvillé Christmas Market

marche-noel-ribeauville

Ribeauvillé Christmas Market is very original as it's entirely built around a medieval theme. You'll be totally immersed in the medieval theme as soon as you step in the market, with its many stands and animations. It's fun for everyone, young and old alike!

In addition to the original theme and the countless activities offered, the town of Ribeauvillé is beautifully decorated. A true little gem!

I liked

  • The really well-done and original medieval theme
  • Countless activities
  • Splendid decorations

I liked a little less

  • It's quite crowded as it's only open for 2 weekends in December

Riquewihr Christmas Market

decoration-noel-riquewihr

Riquewihr, as Kaysersberg or Ribeauvillé, is a cute little village located on the Alsace Wine Route. The Christmas Market in itself is not very big, but a walk through the little streets to discover the beautiful decorated facades is definitely worth it!

I liked

  • Meandering through the village, to discover its little streets, medieval buildings and fortifications.
  • The Christmas decorations of the facades (splendid, as often in Alsace!)

I liked a little less

  • There is not a lot of chalets, but does it really matter?

Bouxwiller Christmas Market is the most important Christmas market in the North of Alsace. It is not necessarily very well-known, but it's actually a superb market that is well-worth a stop! Quatzenheim Christmas market

fermes-noel-quatzenheim

Quatzenheim is the small village where I live, only located 15 minutes from Strasbourg. Every year, it hosts a very authentic Christmas market for one evening. The splendid farmyards of the Kochersberg are entirely decorated by the village inhabitants and host the market stands... It's truly enchanting and perfect to enjoy a very local atmosphere and get a little bit off the beaten path!

I liked

  • The wonderful setting of Alsatian farms
  • The quality of products sold
  • An authentic atmosphere

I liked a little less

  • It's only during one evening, so be sure not to miss it!

Handschuheim Christmas Market

marche-noel-handschuheim-alsace

Handschuheim Christmas Market is located in the Kochersberg (where I live !), near Strasbourg. It's a charming village, with beautiful half-timbered houses and impressive Alsatian farms.

The market is held in the streets or in some farmyards. Far from very touristy markets, it's a market with a very local atmosphere, with stands offering real artisanal products.

It's quite big considering the size of the village, which allows for a nice and long visit! I loved it:)

noel-thann-alsace

Thann Christmas Market is one of the few markets in the South of Alsace that is open every day up until Christmas... It's a small market, but it's vey quaint, welcoming and imbued with authenticity. You can read the article written by Vincent about Thann Christmas Market.

I liked

  • The atmosphere
  • The big Christmas tree under which you can drink some mulled wine and drop off you letter to Father Christmas.
  • The illuminations of the facades of the houses around the Collégiale.

Rosheim Christmas Market

marche-noel-rosheim-alsace

Rosheim Christmas market is a small and little-known market. And yet, it is worth a stop.

Rosheim is a charming medieval town and the perfect backdrop for a Christmas market. If you go at sunset (as most markets you might say, but it's particularly true here), the illuminations of the town and monuments are truly beautiful.

As for the chalets, don't forget to stop for an apple fritter at the Association des Arboriculteurs du Piémont de Saint-Odile: they are delicious!

I liked

  • Pretty village
  • Not crowded
  • Very beautiful illuminations

I liked a little less

  • Not such a big market

Guebwiller Christmas Market is called "Noël Bleu" (Blue Christmas). Every year, the town hosts illuminations and activities on this theme. It is best suited for visitors looking for a more local atmosphere.

I liked

Eguisheim has been elected as 2013 favourite French village. We must admit that the village is actually adorable! The Christmas market is small, but very cute and is well worth a stop!

Turckheim Christmas Market

noel-turckheim-alsace

Turckeim Christmas market is not very famous. However, the village is very cute and is a perfect stop to taste the Christmas atmosphere in Alsace without ending up in a crowd!

There are very few chalets in Turckheim, but there is a full-size advent calendar. To see the daily calendar window being opened, come every day at 5 pm sharp!

Another specificity is that there is a night watchman of Turckheim making their rounds every evening at 9 pm. Definitely something to check out!

I liked

  • The peaceful atmosphere of Turckheim
  • The village in itself is very cute
  • The giant advent calendar

I liked a little less

  • It's hard to speak of a Christmas Market, even if I did enjoy it!

Hunspach Chrismas Market

marche-noel-hunspach-alsace

Hunspach is ranked as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. You can quickly realize why when you get there: the village is charming and its cohesion is impressive. You'll find there beautiful Alsatian half-timbered houses with white facades, that are typical from this part of Alsace.

Hunspach Christmas Market is a very tiny but pleasant market to visit. Don't go especially for this market if you are staying far from there (it's very quick to go around the market), but you can include it in a tour of various Christmas markets.

It's still worth it as, besides being in the pretty setting of the village, the stands are of good quality and the atmosphere is very local.

I liked

  • Splendid village
  • Not too crowded
  • Stands of good quality

I liked a little less

  • Very small market, so it's better to plan to see other ones in the same day!
  • The village houses are not really decorated.

Kingersheim Christmas Market

I liked

  • A theme fit for our time!
  • Original decorations, that are quite different from what we usually see.
  • Cute coffeeshop to grab a drink or a snack.
