Snowshoeing at Champ du Feu with Randonnée Verte

Listening to the sound of snow under your snowshoes and admiring beautiful snow-covered landscapes is tempting, isn’t it? Then, let’s go for a snowshoe walk! I really enjoy walking with snowshoes in the snow: you don’t have to learn any skills (you just have to walk!) and it lets you go in places usually not reachable with simple hiking shoes. And, isn’t it fun to run in powder snow?

I have tried a snowshoe hike at Champ du Feu (the closest ski resort to Strasbourg) with a group of friends. Having a guide has two advantages: you’ll learn many things about the nature and the region where you are walking and you’ll also avoid… getting lost!;-)

Jean-Michel, from Randonnée Verte, really insists during these hikes on the discovery and respect of the surrounding nature. That is what I really liked when reading his website and what was also confirmed during the walk. We learned a lot, as Jean-Michel is passionate and interesting!

The snowshoes and sticks are supplied and the snowshoe hike lasts about 2h/2h30, with a tea or mulled wine break in the middle. It’s an easy level: it might climb a little bit sometimes, but it is flat most of the time, making it accessible to everyone!

I liked

  • Discovering the peaceful snow-covered landscape
  • Very interesting explanations about the nature
  • Tea and mulled wine break

I liked a little less

  • Nothing!

Getting here

By car

Randonnée verte is located in Boersch, but your meet-up point will be at the Champ du Feu ski resort. The resort is located:

  • 55 km from Strasbourg (about 50 minutes drive)
  • 52 km from Colmar (about 55 minutes drive)
  • 93 km from Mulhouse (about 1h15 drive)

Beware: mandatory chains or snow tires!

By public transport

The “navette des neiges” (shuttle), with prior booking, will bring you to Champ du Feu from Strasbourg, Obernai, Sélestat, Schirmeck and Barr. More information here.

Feeling peckish?

If you are feeling peckish and have a car, I would recommend you to stop at the Auberge de la Charbonnière a few minutes from there. Otherwise, the Auberge de la Rothlach is pretty good as well.
