La Maison du Fromage of the Valley of Munster (The Cheese House) is a museum entirely dedicated to the famous Munster cheese and to the related traditions of the Valley of Munster. It is a very promising theme, but let me tell you straight away that this museum was a disappointment.

The visit includes a short tour where you can read signs about cheeses, a movie about the 4 seasons in the Valley of Munster, the visit of a cheese factory, a barn with a few Vosges cows and a demonstration on how to make Munster cheese. I loved the movie, but the rest was really disappointing.

You will visit the cheese factory from behind windows, with only a couple of explanatory signs (during the weekend, machines are not working, so it is really not interesting). The cheese making demonstration is nice, but too hasty. You will still learn a couple of things, but it could be better, especially considering the ticket price. Height of absurdity: there is no Munster cheese tasting. You can only taste Siesskass, a type of cream cheese.

You can go to the shop to taste a piece of Munster cheese, if you would like to buy some, but it is definitely not offered with a smile…

  • The price: it is very expensive for a tour that is hardly great
  • Not being able to taste Munster cheese
  • A not so friendly staff

  • 17 km from Colmar (about 20 minutes drive)
  • 56 km from Mulhouse (about 45 minutes drive)
  • 88 km from Strasbourg (about 1h drive)
