Visit Bouxwiller, a small wonder in the north of Alsace

Do you know Bouxwiller? It is a small town located northwest of Strasbourg, which is the current capital of the Hanau region and was once the administrative center of the Hanau-Lichtenberg county. We are here in a corner of Alsace which is not the most known although it conceals wonders... of which Bouxwiller is a part! It is indeed a city with a rich built heritage: you will see beautiful Alsatian houses!

Laurène is the blog's creator. Originally from Brittany but now living in Alsace, she has fallen in love with her adopted region and loves exploring its every nook and cranny to unearth great ideas to share with you!

Historical circuit of Bouxwiller

I advise you to follow the historical circuit to discover the beauty of Bouxwiller’s architecture: go to the Place du Château and follow this itinerary. The city is not very big, but every street is full of surprises! Look up and admire the details on the facades, it is beautiful. The tour takes about 1 hour, time to walk around and take pictures. I must admit that I tended to stop at almost every building!

It is also possible in some places to climb on the old city walls: ideal to take a little height and admire the city from above, with its beautiful roofs and its alleys…

The city center of Bouxwiller is not very lively but has a lot of charm: it is far from the liveliness of the villages of the Wine Route, but it has the merit of being peaceful and beautiful… If you want to discoverAlsace a little off the beaten track and away from the crowds, visiting Bouxwiller is a great idea!

A day in Bouxwiller

If you want to plan a nice day in the area, I encourage you to plan a visit to the historical center of Bouxwiller, then to walk up to the Bastberg, a hill on the heights of the city that hosts a nature reserve. You can have a picnic and finish the walk in the afternoon. This is a great day to discover the built and natural heritage of Bouxwiller, to take a nice walk and to have a picnic in a bucolic setting! What more could you ask for?

Christmas market in Bouxwiller

Bouxwiller has a wonderful Christmas market: this is how I discovered the town for the first time. It’s a really authentic market that takes place in the city center, it’s really full of charm and you’ll see more locals than tourists walking around 😉 More info here on the Christmas market of Bouxwiller.

  • Magnificent architectural heritage
  • City far from the tourist circuits, ideal to be far from the crowd
  • Possibility to combine the visit with a walk to the Bastberg
  • Quite a few shops
