The origins of the project: physics and technology enthusiasts
Behind the Maison d’Illusion in Wissembourg are a Polish couple of engineers with a passion for technology: Margaret and her husband. Margaret, in particular, has always been passionate about physics.
The idea to create this place came to them during a family trip: while visiting a house of illusions elsewhere, their daughter thought the concept was so amazing that they decided to create their own space in Alsace.
Their goal? To present optical illusions, visual effects, and scientific curiosities. Some installations are meant to be observed, while others allow visitors to handle them or even interact with them.
The idea, in any case, is to be able to try them out and then, of course, understand the science behind the visual magic. Some of the illusions presented here are quite well-known (though we often don’t know why our brains react that way!), while others are more original.
In designing the program, the couple drew on the children’s actual questions, their interests, and their natural curiosity. They also drew on what the two of them wanted to share and what particularly interested them. Everything was chosen to inspire a desire to learn.

The museum itself is rather small, but it’s full of treasures that help you understand the exhibits. If you visit it on your own, you might miss the most important parts: the small explanatory signs on site aren’t quite enough to grasp the full complexity of the illusions.
My advice: Take your time! The guided tour is always included in the price of your admission, so be sure to take advantage of it.
The owners always take visitors on a full tour to explain what they’re seeing and break down how the brain and physics work. The couple conducts tours in French, English, and Polish, and one of their friends can even take over in German if needed.
Thanks to these explanations, the tour is interesting, fun, and interactive. If you’re curious, you can easily spend an hour and a half there. It’s a great activity to combine with a stroll through the historic center of Wissembourg. An excellent idea for an outing, especially if it starts to rain during your weekend in Northern Alsace!”
My honest opinion: the museum’s budget and size
The admission fee may seem a bit steep for a museum of this size. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this is a private, independent museum. Keeping this kind of cultural venue afloat without massive subsidies is a real challenge for the owners. The price is justified in part by the time Margaret and her husband personally spend with each visitor to guide their experience. If you go along with it and listen to the explanations, the experience is well worth the trip!
The venue offers packages for renting out the museum, whether for groups or to host a unique birthday party. I think that could really be a fun activity!

No, the guided tour is always included in the ticket price! In fact, that’s the main highlight of the place. Since the small explanatory signs are fairly brief, a tour led by the owners is essential to understanding each illusion.
