Matsumotoya – Everyday Japanese Cuisine (by Léa)

AtMatsumotoya, there is no sushi or maki: contrary to popular belief, the Japanese don’t eat them every day. The menu at this Japanese restaurant features everyday dishes: gyozas (ravioli), takoyakis (octopus fritters), yasai tendon (fried vegetables), soba or udon (noodles with different accompaniments… A little bonus: gluten-free dishes are also available) and sweet lovers will delight in the matcha green tea cheesecake. It’s copious, delicious, excellent value for money… In short, my favorite Japanese restaurant in Strasbourg. The decoration and the service are also very nice and it is possible to eat “à la japonaise” sitting cross-legged on a tatami.

Cinnamon – A Chic Indian Classic (by Léa)

It’s not easy to find an Indian restaurant that everyone agrees on, but Cinnamon is just that . It offers classic dishes such as lamb or shrimp cooked “au tandoor” (in a clay oven) and lentil dhal. But it also features seafood and grilled meats simmered in coconut milk and spices (ginger, cilantro, saffron, turmeric, pepper, etc., depending on your choice). We thoroughly enjoyed seasonal vegetables with saffron sauce, cashew and almond cream, and chicken tikka masala. A special mention goes to the delicious cashew and pistachio naan. However, we didn’t try the desserts.

Le Cosy – A Chinese Institution for 15 Years (by Vivine)

I remember a few years ago, there were Chinese restaurants everywhere. Then they just disappeared—it’s as if they’ve turned into Japanese, Thai, and now Vietnamese or Korean restaurants, haha. Le Cosy has been a warm and welcoming fixture for 15 years on the quiet but central Rue des Couples, much to our delight. The menu is varied: from Chinese hot pot to wok-fried dishes, not to mention Peking duck and spring rolls, with a few vegetarian options—it’s like Shanghai in Strasbourg!

Lanna Thai Chili – Thai Cuisine from Krutenau

Chili Thaï Lanna is Thai cuisine in all its finesse. After years of trying to find a decent Thai restaurant in Strasbourg, I’ve finally found the pearl that satisfies my taste buds! The restaurant, located in the Krutenau district, is beautifully appointed, with attentive service, and serves delicious Thai dishes. Don’t miss the crispy rice salad, with its thousand flavors, as well as the other dishes, each more delicious than the last. A favorite!

Hibiki – Japanese Elegance in Schiltigheim (by Léa)

The Hibiki is the kind of rare pearl that you want to keep the address for yourself! The dishes at this Japanese restaurant, run by two Japanese natives of Nagoya and Hiroshima, are real killers: green beans with black sesame, simmered and caramelized lotus and carrots, salmon with white miso, sashimi, caramelized chicken, red bean or sweet potato ice creams… All accompanied by (real) sake or a fine selection of wines, often organic. The Hibiki will definitely reconcile you with tofu and it is the opportunity to test the Japanese sense of service (excellent).

Santa Elena – Latin America, the “bistronomic” way (by Léa)

Santa Elena is abistronomic version of the flavors of Latin America. On the menu, which changes with the seasons, lamb mice with beer and coriander, fish and seafood cassolette with spicy sauce, beef filet or entrecote, or crepes with milk jam. Being in a very greedy mood one evening, we took the menu starter, main course and dessert at 28 euros. After a guacamole and smoked salmon salad, a fish with coconut milk, spices and quinoa, and a ricotta pie with lime, coconut and almonds, we were full and delighted!

O Brazil – Spicy Brazilian Flavors (by Léa)

Located in the very nice street of Jeu des Enfants, the Brazilian restaurant O Brazil delighted us with its delicia de legumes em queijo (vegetables baked in the oven with melted cheese) and its xinxim de galinha (chicken, peanuts, cashew nuts, shrimps, rice and coconut sauce). On the menu, many dishes in sauce, fritters or meatballs, fish, cheese or vegetables but also some grilled meat. I found it exotic, tasty and… spicy 😉 The plate of Brazilian desserts (custard pie, chocolate/coffee cake called despacito and passion fruit cheesecake) finished convincing me. I could have also chosen a bowl of ice cream, sorbets and fried bananas. The staff is very nice and will be happy to advise you.

Abyssinia – Ethiopian Food to Share (by Léa)

This is one of the original features of this Ethiopian restaurant: Yemiser Key Wot (lentil purée with chilli), Kitfo (raw beef with green chillies, ginger and onions) or Doro Wot (chicken drumsticks) can be eaten with the fingers at Abyssinia ! We shared a Ye-Tsom Beyaynetu, an assortment of 10 deliciously cooked and spiced vegetables. Being a vegetarian, I only cook vegetables, often with spices, and yet I was surprised and delighted to discover new flavors! Abyssinia also has a small list of African wines, not to be underestimated. We did not taste the coffee (Ethiopian of course) but it is worth the detour.

Au Cèdre – Lebanese Institution in Strasbourg (by Laurène)

Feel like Lebanese flavors? Rendezvous at the Lebanese restaurant Au Cèdre, a Strasbourg institution. I enjoyed this fresh cuisine, full of herbs and flavors, with a focus on vegetables… It is also easy to eat vegetarian, even if meat and fish lovers can also enjoy grilled meats. I loved the Mezzeh, which allows you to taste a lot of different little things and to have a lot of taste buds!

Tzatzi – Mediterranean sunshine all year round (by Vivine)

Generally, we like to support the independents. Tzatzi is certainly the concept of a group, but that doesn’t take away from the pleasure of a sunny place in all seasons: bright decoration, welcoming staff and in the plate Mediterranean explosion! Here no borders we find Turkish pides, Lebanese mezzes, Israeli shakshukas and other specialties more or less known or reinvented, all enhanced with cocktails what else 😉

Damascus – Syrian cuisine offering the best value for money (by Céline)

The Esplanade Shopping Center doesn’t look like much, and may seem like a rather odd recommendation. But here you’ll find a host of food stores, Turkish, Asian, Lebanese and Syrian restaurants. From Levantine to Asian cuisine, there are a good dozen world-food addresses to discover. In the center’s courtyard, almost every restaurant has its own terrace (some of them quite large), so there’s always room. If you want to travel a little and discover traditional dishes, this is a really good idea.

Le Damas is a Syrian restaurant, and the dishes are delicious, generous and inexpensive. If you can’t decide, I recommend the assortment of mezzés. The fried Lebanese bread that crisps up in the fatouche salad or the vegetable dishes, what a delight!

Fresh, colorful, fragrant, my favorite dish is Fattah with eggplant… Grilled meats, hot and cold mezzés, manaïchs (Syrian pizza), the value for money is excellent. There’s plenty of choice for under €10, so you can be curious and indulge yourself! The welcome and staff are always very friendly too.

As for “Western” cuisine (Europe, North America), there’s an overwhelming variety to choose from—and don’t count on us to find the best burger!

We should, however, mention the Italian cuisine at La Cantina (Marché Gayot). We should also note the Portuguese restaurant La Patrie (Krutenau) and all the other (great) finds we’ll be adding!

What You Need to Know About International Restaurants in Strasbourg

• The Krutenau and the Esplanade offer the widest variety of restaurants (Thai, Syrian, Lebanese, Latin American)
• For authentic Japanese cuisine, Matsumotoya (everyday hot dishes) and Hibiki (upscale, in Schiltigheim) are two sure bets—though they’re very different.
• Several restaurants are vegetarian-friendly: Abyssinia, Au Cèdre, and Cinnamon
