The Reindeer Farm is an unusual animal park in Alsace that's a must-see for children. I was a little late getting there (when you don't have children, the opportunity is less likely!), but when I visited the reindeer farm I realized what made it such a popular family outing. This educational farm, located high above Stosswihr in the Vallée de Munster, is a magical place that can be visited almost all year round!

Origins of the reindeer farm

The history of the reindeer farm is presented in a short film that I recommend you see at the start of your visit. The the story of a family of enthusiastsThe family who own the Schantzwasen inn were fascinated by the Nordic countries and dreamed of owning reindeer, until they brought their first reindeer from Rovaniemi in Finland in 2005, and the first baby reindeer arrived in 2007… Breeding was underway! Since then, the place has been both a breeding farm and an educational farm for families, welcoming young and old to see reindeer and learn more about this species while enjoying a breath of fresh air with the whole family. A good combo, isn’t it?

Meeting with the reindeers

The herd comprises around thirty reindeer, who roam freely in a 6-hectare park located at an altitude of 1,096m in the Massif du Tanet (near the ski resort of the same name). An 800-metre-long trail has been laid out in the middle of the forest, allowing visitors to the farm to walk among the reindeer without disturbing them. The reindeer can come along the trail close to humans (they can be patted on the back if they approach), but they can also be left to their own devices and go about their business undisturbed. It’s an approach I particularly appreciate because it’s respectful of the animals: you get an immersive experience, while learning to appreciate the rhythm and preferences of the reindeer. Although meetings are almost guaranteed, they often take place at a distance!

There are also a number of interesting explanatory panels along this educational trail, enabling visitors to learn more about the reindeer’s lifestyle, habitat and behavior. A fun and instructive family outing! And don’t miss the chance to witness the reindeer’s special moment, when you can watch them at close quarters as they feast on lychen. At the same time, an enthusiastic guide will shed valuable light on these amazing animals. It’s a moment I really enjoyed.

Sami Museum and Santa Claus House

At the end of the tour, you can visit an interesting little room dedicated to Sami culture, the reindeer herding people. And don’t forget to visit Santa’s House, which is sure to please the little ones… Yes, what would Santa be without his faithful reindeer? 😉

Sleep and eat at the Auberge du Schantwasen

The Reindeer Farm is located in exactly the same place as theSchantzwasen inn, where you can both sleep and eat. The natural setting is magnificent and the interior cosy, with a menu of traditional dishes. This can be a good opportunity to take a snack break, have a drink on the terrace with a view of the mountains, or enjoy a meal before or after your visit to Ferme aux Rennes.

And around?

There’s plenty of opportunity for walks around the reindeer farm. Take a look at my article on the Vallée de Munster, where you’ll find a few ideas for easy hikes, including the On piste 3 circuit, which makes a loop from the farm via the Schupferen.

  • Herd of reindeer roaming free in a huge park
  • Meet the reindeer!
  • Interesting explanations
  • Magnificent location in the Tanet massif
  • Not very easy to get to, so I advise you to plan to combine it with other activities (meals, hiking…).
