A campsite in the heart of nature

The Wattwiller campground is a Huttopia campground. Huttopia is known for its very “nature-oriented” campgrounds, and that’s what struck me right away when I arrived. The campground’s location, on the hills above Wattwiller in the forest of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park, is already stunning, but I was also pleasantly surprised by the layout of the campground itself.

We’re truly surrounded by greenery, both along the paths and between the campsites and accommodations. I arrived on a Friday evening after a somewhat hectic week, and it was as if my body suddenly relaxed as I was immersed in this soothing environment… It feels so good!

Accommodation and pitches at Camping Huttopia Wattwiller

Campers, vans, tents, chalets, huts or trailers

You have a choice of accommodations at the Huttopia campground in Wattwiller. You can reserve a site for your van, trailer, RV, or tent ( with or without electricity, for up to 6 people, and of course with access to the restroom facilities), or you can opt for one of the other accommodations available.

Your choice:

• canvas and wood tents with different levels of comfort for 5 people
• wooden chalets for 4 to 6 people (including one specially adapted for people with reduced mobility)
• mobile homes for 5 people
• trailers for 4 people

My weekend in a hut – Reviews

I tried out a “cahutte,” a really nice two-story cabin made of wood and canvas, with a floor area of 30 square meters and electricity. The ground floor is like a small cabin, with a living area featuring a wood-burning stove, a kitchenette with two gas burners, a sink, a refrigerator (and dishes), as well as a bathroom area with a toilet and shower (no sink; you use the sink in the main room).

You reach the upper level via a ladder. Up there, it’s like a big tent waiting for us—only more comfortable! There’s canvas overhead, but there’s a floor and thick mattresses in the two sleeping areas separated by a canvas partition (one with a double bed, the other with three single beds). Blankets are provided, and you can also opt for sheets and towels. I slept really well there!

Outside, there’s a covered patio with a table and benches, as well as two comfortable camping chairs. It’s perfect for eating meals outdoors, but also for relaxing with a book (of course, I tried both options!). The patio is especially pleasant since it overlooks nothing but greenery. The neighbors aren’t very far away, but, again, vegetation separates the sites, so you really don’t feel like you’re on top of each other.

The place is functional and really cute—I really enjoyed spending the weekend there! Just be careful with the ladder ( it’s really steep—if you’re used to getting up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, this won’t be ideal!).

I’d recommend staying at the cabin when the weather is mild, since one of its biggest draws is really the outdoor setting. The interior is pleasant too , and the atmosphere in the cabin is very cozy (especially when you light a little fire! Yes, we tried that just for fun), but there isn’t a sofa where you can settle in comfortably for a morning of reading, for example.

Common areas

The Huttopia Wattwiller campsite has a large common room with tables, large sofas and a beautiful fireplace, as well as board games and books.

This common area opens onto the café, which serves drinks, light snacks, and homemade pizzas in the evening (during the summer and on weekends in June and September). You can choose to sit inside or on the patio. There’s also a small grocery store at the front desk. Don’t plan on doing your grocery shopping there—it’s very small—but it carries the basics and can come in handy. For breakfast, you can also order bread, which is delivered every morning from the village bakery.

Things to do in the campsite

The Huttopia Wattwiller campsite has two swimming pools: one heated indoors and one outdoors (particularly beautiful I think), so you can enjoy it whatever the weather.

There is also a large playground, as well as tennis courts , padel courts , pétanque courts , a ping-pong table, and a foosball table. You can also rent bicycles.

During summer school break, many activities are also organized (donkey and pony rides, treasure hunts for kids, yoga, survival camps (!!), festive evenings…). Outside of these periods, things are quieter, but you can check in advance to find out what’s on the schedule for your dates.

Things to do around the campsite

The location of the Huttopia Wattwiller campsite is clearly a big plus , as there’s a great variety of things to do. Here are a few ideas, with links to other blog posts to find out more (yes, it’s a corner of Alsace we like on the blog!).

Hiking in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park

If you feel like going for a hike, you can just park your car and leave it there, since the hiking trails are right there—what a treat! There are tons of hiking trails in the area and plenty of beautiful walks to enjoy: we’re in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park—it’s a stunning place.

Directly from the campsite, I took a lovely hike to see the Rocher du Hirzenstein and the Siehbaechle waterfall.

While you’re in the area, I also recommend hiking up to the Grand Ballon, the highest peak in the Vosges Mountains. For example, here’s a superb, challenging hike starting from Guebwiller to get there (but there are plenty of easier options as well, including driving up and continuing along the Route des Crêtes).

Bike

If you like cycling, this is the place for you! You can take a challenging bike tour up to the ridges, or opt for a more leisurely, scenic ride.

Here are a few ideas:

• A cycling tour around Guebwiller, between vineyards and forests
• A cycling loop in the Thur and Doller valleys
• A longer cycling route in the Thur Valley

A visit to an inescapable place of remembrance

The Hartmannswillerkopf(Vieil-Armand), an important place of remembrance from the First World War, is just around the corner.

Gourmet meal in a farmhouse inn

For food lovers, this is also a great opportunity to enjoy a meal at a farmhouse inn (best to do this at the end of your hike—otherwise, I’m warning you, you won’t be able to set off again!). The Molkenrain farmhouse inn, located nearby, is one of our favorites.

Wellness break

If you’re in the mood to be pampered, one of the most beautiful spas in Alsace is right next door! The Domaine du Hirtz and its Nordic spa await you for a wonderful wellness getaway.

Wine Route

That’s right, the famous Alsace Wine Route is also nearby! It’s the perfect opportunity to explore its charming villages and stop by a few wineries for tours and tastings (in moderation, of course).
