Visit Scherwiller – My tips and ideas for visits

The village of Scherwiller is located on the Alsace Wine Route, 5 km from Sélestat in the Bas-Rhin. It's a village that's not really well known to tourists, and which I discovered when I cycled along the Wine Route. I really fell in love with this place, it is a beautiful village.

It is really worth taking the time to stop and stroll around. It is not very big but it is worth a visit! Visiting Scherwiller is also very pleasant if you want to enjoy the beauty of the villages of the Wine Route while being quiet, far from the crowd that invades the most famous villages in season.

Tourism in Scherwiller

The village of a hundred laundries

Scherwiller is crossed by the Aubach river and its city center has a hundred wash houses. Yes, just that! This small stream and the wash houses give a lot of charm to the village, especially since it also has very beautiful half-timbered houses dating from the 16th to the 19th century. These half-timbered houses are in very good condition and some of them are really remarkable, I must say that I was quite impressed during my walk in the village!

Show Les Lavandières

On weekends during the summer, it is possible to attend the show ” Les lavandières de Scherwiller”, during which the laundries become theatrical stages where scenes from the rural life of the village are played. I’ve never had the opportunity to go there, but I hear it’s worth it!

An important wine-producing village

Scherwiller has no less than 370 hectares of vineyards, making it one of the largest wine-producing villages in the Bas-Rhin. It is particularly famous for its Riesling. For a visit and a tasting, I recommend you to go and visit one of my favorite winemakers, Domaine Achillée.

Medieval garden of Scherwiller

The medieval garden of Scherwiller is part of the circuit of the Medieval Gardens of the villages of the Association and the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg. The garden of Scherwiller is located in the rue de l’école and is dedicated to courtly love: it presents the rules of the game of love in the 12th century, of which the courted woman is the central figure.

Scherwiller is also known for its gourmet walk, called Scherwiller Gourmet Trail. Very nice!

What to do around Scherwiller?

Ascent to the Ortenbourg and Ramstein castles

The ruins of the 13th-century castles of Ortenbourg (443 meters above sea level) and Ramstein (384 meters above sea level) can be found high above the village. You can walk up from Scherwiller to admire the view of the village roofs, the vineyards, the Alsace plain and even the spire of the Strasbourg cathedral and the Swiss Alps!

For hiking enthusiasts, there are also some great walks to be had in the area. We recommend for example this beautiful sporty hike to the castles of Ortenburg, Ramstein and Bernstein.

Bike tour around Scherwiller

If you like cycling, I can recommend a very nice cycling loop that passes through Scherwiller and that will allow you to discover both the Wine Route and the Alsace Plain. The Medieval Cities and Baroque Art tour is one of my favorites!
