Best ice cream parlors in Strasbourg: where to eat a good ice cream?

1. Le Petit Glacier, my favourite

I’ve visited this family-run ice cream shop—located on Rue d’Austerlitz and Rue Gutenberg—at least a dozen times, and I’ve never been disappointed. Their ice cream sundaes, all delicious and enormous, are well worth the trip, especially the fruit-flavored ones, since they’re made to order. The “Hawaii,” for example (passion fruit and mango sorbets, coconut ice cream, melon, mango coulis, and whipped cream), is a huge hit! You can also create your own sundae, with 2 to 6 scoops of your choice.

The terrace is large and shaded, and if you’re not much of an ice cream fan, Le Petit Glacier offers other treats like crêpes and homemade pie. Bonus: the staff is truly lovely. Good to know: in the summer, they also set up a seasonal stand at Parc de la Citadelle.

2. Toscani, the Original

If you’re in the moodfor something unique, Toscani is the place to go. This small ice cream shop, located on the charming Rue de la Lanterne in downtown, regularly offers new or unique flavors: avocado, cactus, pear and cinnamon, verbena, ginger, rose… If you’re not into trying these kinds of ice creams, the classic flavors are also on the menu!

No ice cream sundaes here: Toscani doesn’t have a patio, so you’ll have to get a cone or a cup to go.

3. Franchi, the diversity of fragrances

In Strasbourg, Franchi is a fixture. The family-owned business was founded by the Italian Joseph Franchi in the 1930s and now has six locations in the city:

For a little treat, choose an ice cream cone from among the 50 flavors available, ranging from classics to more unique options (After Eight, Smurf…). If you’re in the mood for something indulgent, go for an ice cream sundae—it’s almost a meal in itself!

My favorites include the “Grenobloise” (vanilla, pistachio, caramel, and stracciatella ice cream, whipped cream, walnuts, and honey) and the “Tout Chocolat,” but there are plenty of options with fresh fruit. Franchi also makes frozen desserts and sells tubs of ice cream to go, which are excellent. The only downside: this ice cream shop gets packed in the summer, whether you’re buying takeout or trying to snag a seat on the patio.

4. Christian, the classic

Every summer, Christian’s Pastry Shop sets up its homemade ice cream stand at the foot of the cathedral. Whether it’s ice cream (chocolate, vanilla, coffee…) or sorbets (raspberry, peach, melon, coconut…), it’s a real treat! Be sure to try the traditional Alsatian flavors: mirabelle plum, geranium, fromage blanc, and wild blackberry. Good news: the stand now has a small terrace where you can enjoy your ice cream right there. Otherwise, I recommend walking a few meters to Place du Château and enjoying your ice cream while admiring the cathedral.
