What to see at Landskron: keep, ramparts and panoramic views

Listed as a Monument Historique, Landskron castle is one of the many fortified castles that dot the Alsatian landscape. What makes it so special is its geographical location on the French-Swiss border, and the fact that its ruins still stand majestically.

You can see the remains of several towers, a keep and a large surrounding wall. It’s an impressive sight, especially with the landscape stretching as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, you can even see the Swiss Alps. Personally, it’s one of my favorite castles in Alsace, along with Ferrette, which is not far away.

Landskron’s history: from the Habsburgs to Vauban

Landskron Castle was built at the end of the 13th century on a site already occupied by an earlier fortification, to watch over the strategic Sundgau corridor and the city of Basel. Here are the key stages of its history:

  • 👑 The Habsburgs: after early rivalries between local families, the castle passes to the Habsburgs
  • 🛡️ 1462: it returns to the Reich lords of Reichenstein, who fortify it in 1516 so it can withstand firearms
  • ⚔️ After the Peace of Westphalia (1648): it is transferred to France and Vauban strengthens its defenses. It serves as a garrison (like Huningue and Neuf-Brisach), then as a state prison until the Revolution, earning it the nickname “Alsatian Bastille”
  • 💥 1813: it is partly destroyed by Austrian and Bavarian troops during the Napoleonic Wars

Only the keep was preserved, thanks to the intervention of a local priest, who convinces a victorious general to keep it as a sign of victory. This keep would later serve as an observation post for the Germans during World War II.

The Pro-Landskron association: restoration and events

Since 1984, Landskron Castle has been maintained by theAssociation pour la Sauvegarde du Château du Landskron – Pro-Landskron, made up of French and Swiss volunteers. Their aim is twofold: to secure the ruins and to promote their history.

Several stabilization works have been carried out, notably on the keep and the walls. Archaeological digs have also taken place on site, helping us better understand its evolution, including its modern-era fortification phases.

Thanks to this in-depth work, the castle is now partially restored and open to visitors, in an approach that respects both its identity and its natural surroundings.

The association also runs events on site. To keep up with what’s on, head to the Pro-Landskron website.

🏰 A tip from a local: check what events the association has planned before you come. I once stumbled on a Medieval Festival day by chance, and it was really fun!

Visiting Landskron on site: self-guided visit and picnic

The château is open to visitors all year round. Once there, take time toexplore the different levels of the château, and of course admire the panoramic views. Several explanatory panels trace its history and provide keys to understanding the site.

🧺 A tip from a local: come late in the day with a picnic. The light is beautiful, and you’ll often see families settled in.
