Are you looking for a good restaurant in Strasbourg? When I have friends coming over in Strasbourg, they often ask me for tips for good restaurants where to eat Alsatian and French food. Because we are among friends here, I have decided to write in this article, my selection of good adresses in Strasbourg, as I already did with my favourite restaurants in Colmar

Let me clarify straight away that I’m not claiming to list here the best restaurants in Strasbourg. This list is totally subjective and is by no means exhaustive. I haven’t tested all the restaurants in Strasbourg and I’m not a food critic! Instead, I will simply reveal my favourite Alsatian and French restaurants in Strasbourg, as I would for friends asking for tips.

Of course, this list is not set in stone and I will update it with my new discoveries. There is no hierarchy in the restaurants of this list (besides the ratings).

Bistrot Coco (fusion cuisine)

The Bistrot Coco is one of my absolute favourite restaurants in Strasbourg. Located right in the city centre, on the Grande Île, I went to eat there several times and each time, I came out delighted.

Everything is homemade and the food is original, combining several flavours from varied inspirations. The menu regularly changes, which means you can come back often without getting bored! For those who have trouble choosing, the "Carte Blanche" menu will let the chef Nicolas Di Pol Moro surprise you: just let him know what you don't like and... surprise, surprise!

Decoration-wise, the style is contemporary and elegant, all the while remaining welcoming: it's a success! And as a bonus, the service is pleasant. Remember to book ahead of time as Bistrot Coco, is always almost full!

I liked

  • Excellent homemade food drawing from different inspirations
  • Pleasant atmosphere and service
  • Location in the city centre

I liked a little less

  • Booking is almost essential!

Le Tire-Bouchon (Alsatian food)

choucroute-garnie-tire-bouchon-strasbourg

Le Tire-Bouchon is a winstub located near the Cathedral of Strasbourg. It's a true institution in Strasbourg, where people come to try delicious traditional Alsatian food. Sauerkraut, baeckeoffe, braised ham, zander fillet with sauerkraut... All the great classic dishes of Alsatian gastronomy can be found on the menu, and they are very well executed by the chef Michel Reuche and his team.

The typically Alsatian setting of the Tire-Bouchon is also very pleasant. The restaurant is divided into several little rooms, giving a pleasant impression of intimacy. Service-wise, there is nothing to complain about: you'll be warmly welcomed!

I liked

  • Good quality Alsatian food
  • Pleasant setting and service

Le Banquet des Sophistes (Bistronomic cuisine)

banquet-sophistes

Le Banquet des Sophistes is a restaurant specialised in bistronomic cuisine, namely combining "the refinement of gourmet meals with the conviviality of a bistrot". It is located in the city centre of Strasbourg, at the entrance of the district of Krutenau, a stone's throw away from the Grande Ile.

I was totally charmed by this very nice place, where you are truly warmly welcomed and where you can savour dishes with original flavours. Seasonal products are featured prominently and the menu changes every month, allowing for some beautiful discoveries! As a bonus, the lunch menu is of amazing value!

I liked

  • Delicious food combining a few original flavours
  • Very considerate service
  • Understated and welcoming decoration
  • The location

I liked a little less

Ibérica (Spanish food)

strasbourg-restaurant-iberica

If you think something along the lines of "Spanish food? Meh, I'm afraid it won't be very refined...", come and try the Ibérica restaurant in Strasbourg and you might very well change your mind! I went there for the first time without much conviction and I loved it so much that I went back (and I didn't regret it)! At Ibérica's, you will savour delicious Spanish dishes, that were prepared with fineness.

The Ibérica restaurant is located right in the city centre, on the Grande Ile of Strasbourg, and is in a very beautiful setting. As a bonus, service is friendly and attentive. Absolutely flawless!

You can choose to try a "classic" meal (starter, main and dessert), but you can also go for tapas or cheese and charcuterie boards for sharing. And if you want to make the sampling last at home, it's possible to buy Iberian products in the restaurant's shop.

I liked

  • Fine Spanish food
  • A pretty setting
  • Considerate service
  • Location right in the city centre

I liked a little less

  • Remember to book ahead of time! ;)

Brasserie Les Haras (French and Alsatian food)

les-haras-brasserie

The brasserie Les Haras is quite an exceptional place: the restaurant is located in the former Haras Nationaux (national sud farms) of Strasbourg. The building is quite imposing from outside, but it's even more impressive inside. The 18th-century framework has been kept and the whole has been remarkably well-converted: everything is in wood, including a supberb monumental staircase. It's simply one of the most beautiful restaurant room that I know of! It has actually received the award for the best design in a restaurant in the world (amongts others).

Food-wise, you won't be disappointed either. The menu offers French classics, Alsatian specialties, but also more original dishes. Yes, it is a brasserie, but it's an upmarket one. Price-wise, it's not cheap, but considering the food, the prices, the setting... it's good value. It's one of my all-time favourite and the perfect place for a romantic dinner!

I liked

  • Exceptional setting
  • Delicious food
  • Pleasant service
  • Lunch menu on the weekend

I liked a little less

  • Nothing!

Practical information

Prices

Mains cost between 15 to 35€. Remember that Les Haras offer a lunch menu, even on the weekends! The daily special costs 31€ during the week and 36€ on the weekends for 3 courses; 25€ and 30€ for 2 courses.

Winstub Au Pont du Corbeau (Alsatian food)

choucroute-restaurant-pont-corbeau-strasbourg

Windows made with bottle bottoms, checkered tablecloth, panelling and traditional Alsatian furniture... Welcome to the Winstub du Pont du Corbeau! This family restaurant, run by Christophe Andt, has been created 30 years ago and is well-known by the locals.

You'll come here to taste homemade traditional dishes made from fresh products mostly chosen from local producers: dressed sauerkraut, presskopf, braised ham, fleischkieschle, späetzle, fish fillet with sauerkraut... Le Pont du Corbeau is the perfect place to enjoy Alsatian gastronomy! As a bonus, there is an excellent wine menu.

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, as it should be in a winstub. You might end up very close from the people sitting next to you (to be honest, tables are quite packed in!), but you usually come here with friends and not for a romantic dinner. Remember to book ahead of time, as the place is always crowded out!

I liked

  • Excellent traditional Alsatian food
  • Typical decoration
  • Convivial atmosphere
  • Good selection of wines

I liked a little less

  • Small room and squashed in tables. This restaurant is not suitable for all occasions.

Practical information

La Ruche aux deux Reines (French/fusion cuisine)

ruche-deux-reines-strasbourg

La Ruche aux deux Reines is at once a restaurant, a wine bar and a performance venue. Yes, all that! It is located in the district of Strasbourg railway station, right across the Hôtel Graffalgar (that I really like as well!). You'll receive a very warm welcome and it's a place where you'll feel confortable straight away. The restaurant room is pleasant and you can choose to sit on the terrace.

Food-wise, everything is homemade (except the bread, which is made by the neighbours, as explained on the menu!). On the menu, you will find a large selection of dishes with varied influences (French, Italian, Asian...). They are all absolutely mouthwatering. Ample space is also given to vegetarian dishes; a rare fact that deserves to be noticed! For dessert, don't miss the lemon meringue pie... it's a true wonder!

I liked

  • The various influences for the food
  • Ample choice for vegetarians
  • Very friendly welcome

I liked a little less

  • Nothing!

La Casserole (Gastronomic restaurant)

restaurant-la-casserole-strasbourg

La Casserole is a gastronomic restaurant located in in the heart of the city centre of Strasbourg. With its small room, imparting the space with an intimate atmosphere, and with its understated, but elegant decoration, La Casserole is a true little gem, where it's pleasant to spend time to savour a good meal.

Food-wise, the level is quite high as well. The chef presents modern French food, made with very high quality products. It's fresh, creative and sophisticated... Simply excellent! The lunch menu changes every week and is the perfect way to enjoy La Casserole at lower prices.

Lastly, reception and service are perfect. You can definitely notice that the owner, Cédric Kuster, loves his job and knows how to pass on his passion to his employees. It's the perfect place for special occasions!

I liked

  • Creative and refined food
  • Elegant and intimate atmosphere
  • Perfect service
  • Lunch menu available on Saturdays

I liked a little less

  • Surely, it's quite a budget! ;-)

Practical information

Restaurant Le Caillou (Mediterranean food)

caillou-restaurant-strasbourg

Le Caillou is a Mediterranean restaurant located right in the city centre of Strasbourg. It is mainly frequented by locals. I was won over by Le Caillou the first time I went: a warm setting, reception and service with a smile, delicious food, good value... what else could you ask for?

The name « caillou » is a word used to designate a camera lens and the room decoration is in line with the theme in small touches: for example we can see old cameras on the shelves. The room is warm and the perfect setting for a meal with friends or for a romantic meal.

The food at Le Caillou is Mediterranean food, made with fresh products. The menu is quite limited (it's a good sign) and changes regularly: you'll easily find something you like. As a bonus, waiters are very smiley. An excellent find!

I liked

  • Food with sun-kissed flavours
  • Very pleasant atmosphere and service
  • Location
  • Good value

I liked a little less

  • Nothing!

La Binchstub (Tartes flambées)

meilleures-tartes-flambees-strasbourg-binchstub

Where to eat the best tarte flambée in Strasbourg? That's a difficult question, especially as locals will tell you that you have to get out of Strasbourg and go to the neighboring villages to find one. However, the Binchstub is one of the rare adresses that find mercy with them and with good reason: they serve delicious and completely homemade tartes flambées (thankfully no ready-made pastry base here, as you will find most of the time in other places!), filled with fresh products coming exclusively from farms located in the surroundings of Strasbourg. I was won over straight away... they are excellent!

The Binchstub is a cross between a bar and a restaurant: the space is extremely small and you need to be lucky (or patient) to be able to sit at the counter and taste your flammekueche in the convivial atmosphere of the place. At meal times, the Binchstub is always crowded. It's not possible to make a booking, except for groups of more than 8 people. Another solution could be to buy your tarte flambée to take-away!

Good news: there are now two restaurants and another Binchstub has opened near Broglie square! :)

I liked

  • Excellent tartes flambées
  • Convivial atmosphere
  • Open almost all the time
  • Take-away is possible.

I liked a little less

  • It's too small
  • The tables along the wall are not confortable.

Practical information

Prices and booking

The tartes flambées cost between 9€ and 15€.

Les Copains Débarquent (French food)

resto-strasbourg-copains-debarquent

The restaurant Les Copains Débarquent is the bistrot of the restaurant Les sales Gosses, that I mention a bit further on in this article. Located in the north of the city centre (not far from the Avenue des Vosges), away from the most touristy places in Strasbourg, it's a place where you will meet locals.

They serve bistrot food, with a lot of French regional specialties. The menu evolves regularly, throughout the seasons and the available products. There are novelties every week!

Atmosphere-wise, service is very friendly and the decoration is so very warm. It's the perfect place to have a good time! Do not miss the tiramisu with palets bretons as dessert: it's one of their classics and it's delicious.

I liked

  • Good French bistrot food
  • Warm atmosphere
  • Very friendly service

I liked a little less

  • Nothing!

Les Chauvins Père et Fils (Alsatian tapas and tartes flambées)

tapas-alsaciens

As indicated by its name, the restaurant Les Chauvins is run by a father and his son, both passionate about gastronomy, wine and Alsatian products. I was quite happy when I discovered this restaurant in Strasbourg, because it offers a very special menu: Alsatian tapas. If you are imagining tiny little things to nibble on and see yourself finishing your meal and still being hungry, let met stop you right there: with the Alsatian tapas by Les Chauvins, you'll have a real meal, all the while enjoying the conviviality of tapas to share!

With their tapas, Les Chauvins brings a modern twist to traditional Alsatian recipes: it's nice, because sometimes we are looking for a bit of change, while keeping some flavours we have grown to love. For people visiting Alsace, I find the concept quite nice as well, as you'll be able to taste many dishes without leaving Alsace with 10 extra kilos;-)

Les Chauvins uses many local producers (they are actually named on the menu) and offer dishes with very good quality ingredients. The tapas are delicious and so are the tartes flambées. As for the wine, the menu is quite original, as they offer wines from all around the world, with one common feature: they are all made by Alsatians!

The setting is also quite pleasant and the location is perfect, right in the city centre. There you have it, it's just perfect!

I liked

  • Traditional Alsatian recipes with a twist and some modernity with the tapas.
  • The convivial idea of sharing tapas
  • Excellent tartes flambées
  • The location

I liked a little less

  • Nothing!

Practical information

Prices

Tapas coast between 6€20 and 11€. Take two/three of them to have the equivalent of a main (depending on the tapas chosen!). Tartes flambées cost between 8€30 and 9€50. At lunch, the daily special cost 10€50.

Hôtel-restaurant Chut! (French food)

restaurant-chut-strasbourg

Special notice... this is a secret restaurant! The restaurant Chut! in Strasbourg is located in the district of La Petite France and seems to be jealously kept secret by its fans.

I had the chance to have lunch there for the first time thanks to someone well-informed, who was nice enough to share their tips... What a nice surprise when I discovered, walking in a small alley, the pretty little room with an elegant decoration and intimate atmosphere! The terrace is also a nice discovery: located away from the street, overlooking the river, it's a beautiful place.

Food-wise, you'll savour delicious market cuisine made with fresh products. Running the show, Mojgan Henriet, is also the owner and the architect of the place... That's called talent! There is very little chance to get bored of the place quickly, as the menu changes about once a week.

If you have eaten (a little) too much, you can choose to stay for a night in one of the rooms of the Hotel Chut!, just upstairs...

I liked

  • Intimate place
  • Good market cuisine
  • Pleasant service
  • Terrace overlooking the river

I liked a little less

  • The lunch menu is a bit expensive

Practical information

Prices and booking

Mains cost about 20/25€. The lunch menu cost 17/18€ (2 courses) or 25€ (3 courses and coffee).

Les Sales Gosses (French food)

les-sales-gosses-restaurant-strasbourg

I have already talked about Les Copains débarquent, the bistrot of the restaurant Les Sales Gosses. So it's quite natural that I went to try it... And once again, it was delicious! What is the concept of the Sales Gosses? 6 starters, 6 mains, a menu that changes every 6 weeks with a regional theme and food made only with fresh products (the restaurant actually has the certification label of "Maître restaurateur"). It's exactly what I love!

As for the atmosphere, the restaurant decoration is modern and the space is pleasant. You'll be warmly welcomed. The restaurant is located a bit away from the city centre and the touristy areas. This address is quite famous with locals!

Do not miss: the salted butter caramel and "palets bretons" tiramisu. It's an absolute wonder!

I liked

  • Food made with fresh products
  • Menus changing regularly

I liked a little less

  • Nothing!

Le Botaniste (Budget prices!)

buddha-bowl-botaniste-strasbourg

Le Botaniste is a kind of hybrid space, being at the same time a restaurant, a café and a bar. I liked the place straight away: it's ideal to eat healthy (yay fro fresh and local products!) and for small budgets, not far from Strasbourg railway station.

The decoration is understated and careful, the staff is friendly and the dishes on offer are delicious. Vegetarians and vegans will also find something for them in the homemade dishes menu. It's excellent value to enjoy a good meal with low prices! A cute and unpretentious little place, just as I like them :)

I liked

  • Simple, but delicious food
  • Very low prices
  • The decoration

I liked a little less

  • A large room, a little cold at lunch time

Practical information

Prices

Mains cost between 7 to 12€ for lunch. In the evening, Le Botaniste serve plates for sharing (and cocktails that look scrumptious!).

La Corde à Linge (Alsatian food)

terrasse-restaurant-corde-linge-strasbourg

La Corde à Linge is a restaurant about which locals will say it's very touristy, but to which they will run to, once warmer weather sets in. La Corde à Linge has one of the most beautiful terraces in Strasbourg, located right on the riverside in the heart of La Petite France. It's very pleasant for lunch, diner or to grab a drink! The inside of the restaurant is pleasant as well, with a very successful "retro" decoration.

As for the food, you'll find many Alsatian dishes, burgers, spaetzle, boards and salads. It's nothing special, but it's fine and homemade! Staff is friendly, but a little bit expeditious: you can feel that waiters are a little bit overwhelmed.

La Corde à Linge is open every day and does a continuous service up until a very late hour, which is quite practical.

I liked

  • Beautiful terrace
  • Homemade food
  • Continuous service
  • Good option for groups

I liked a little less

  • Good food, but nothing extraordinary
  • Service is a little bit expeditious

Practical information

Fink Stuebel (Alsatian food)

baba-alsacien-fink-stuebel-strasbourg

The Fink Stuebel is a restaurant and a guesthouse located at the edge of the district of La Petite France. It's a good winstub to savour traditional Alsatian food in a very traditional setting: half-timbering, painted ceiling, checkered tablecloth and regional furniture will put you straight away into the atmosphere.

On the menu, you will find a large selection of Alsatian dishes that will be generously served. Some of them are a little bit more original than what you can usually find in Alsatian restaurants. You'll be able for example to taste fleischnackas or even knepfle, which are not very common! I also tried a good aspargus baeckeoffe.

The service is pleasant and polite, but lacks a bit of friendliness.

I liked

  • Good traditional food with some original dishes
  • Generous portions
  • Very typical decorations
  • Location

I liked a little less

  • The service is polite, but not very warm
